Sara—the Search and Rescue Dog—and her Game of Fetch
Editor’s note: Jana Sweeny is the American Red Cross’s Director of International Communications. She and her team are traveling around Colombia this week, visiting communities made safer by the Red Cross.   As we walk into the Colombian Red Cross training center in Pereira, a yellow lab comes bouncing up, waving her tail enthusiastically. The ball in her mouth turns out to be a lime and she is ready to play fetch. Because I can never say no to a dog, I begin a game of “fetch the lime” with her. It turns out that Sara isn’t just a fun companion–she is a retired search and rescue dog.  The Colo...

Intraosseous vascular access in disasters and mass casualty events: A review of the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence indicates that the IO route of infusion is pharmacokinetically equal to the IV route and superior to the intramuscular (IM) and endotracheal routes for the administration of antidotal drugs in animal models of chemical agent poisoning while wearing full chemical PPE. The IO route is superior to the IM route for antidote administration during hypovolemic shock. Civilian casualties of explosive attacks and mass shootings would likely benefit from expanded use of the IO route and military resuscitation strategies. The IO route is useful for fluid resuscitation in the management of diarrheal and hemorrhag...

Evolution of a Search: The Use of Dynamic Twitter Searches During Superstorm Sandy
Conclusion The most important lesson learned from Superstorm Sandy was the need for a dynamic and flexible monitoring process and strategy to understand and respond quickly to health needs in the areas impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Search strategies should change as frequently as the unfolding event. The inability to adapt to a changing situation ensures stale and stagnant terminology and search results. Twitter lists and Boolean searches should be used together to maximize situational awareness. The most important information comes from the impacted population, whether news, local government or local citizens. These are t...

The Race to Save Lives: Demonstrating the Use of Social Media for Search and Rescue Operations
Conclusions Social media provides a standardized and familiar platform that can serve to create bridges, offering options for cooperation, coordination and collaboration in order to improve preparedness and response to emergencies. Utilizing social media in an emergency, as was well displayed during the exercise conducted in the present study, enabled to locate and evacuate casualties more rapidly and effectively. Thus, social media can contribute towards saving lives during a disaster. Nevertheless, it is recommended that the social media emergency exercise be further implemented and validated in other emergency scenarios...

Applying systematic review search methods to the grey literature: a case study examining guidelines for school-based breakfast programs in Canada
Conclusions This article demonstrated a feasible and seemingly robust method for applying systematic search strategies to identify web-based resources in the grey literature. The search strategy we developed and tested is amenable to adaptation to identify other types of grey literature from other disciplines and answering a wide range of research questions. This method should be further adapted and tested in future research syntheses.

A comparison of results of empirical studies of supplementary search techniques and recommendations in review methodology handbooks: a methodological review
ConclusionsThere is reasonable consistency between recommended best practice (handbooks) and current practice (methodological studies) as it relates to the application of supplementary search methods. The methodological studies provide useful information on the effectiveness of the supplementary search methods, often seeking to evaluate aspects of the method to improve effectiveness or efficiency. In this way, the studies advance the understanding of the supplementary search methods. Further research is required, however, so that a rational choice can be made about which supplementary search strategies should be used, and when.

Failure or success of search strategies to identify adverse effects of medical devices: a feasibility study using a systematic review
Conclusions The search filters currently available for adverse drug effects are not necessarily useful for searching adverse effects data of medical devices. The presence of adverse effects terms in the bibliographic records of articles on medical devices, however, indicates that combinations of adverse effects search terms may be useful in search strategies in MEDLINE and Embase. The results, therefore, suggest that not only a search filter for the adverse effects of medical devices is feasible, but also that it should be a research priority.

Searching for health equity: validation of a search filter for ethnic and socioeconomic inequalities in transport
ConclusionsThe validated search strategy derived in this study facilitates the conduct of systematic reviews and other literature searches investigating whether the effects of interventions differ by ethnicity or socio-economic status and may be further developed in future for other equity-focused searches and reviews.

The Internet search engines as an additional tool in public health research in the context of disease outbreaks
Andrey Valerievich Batrimenko, Svetlana Denisova, Dmitrii Lisovskii, Sergey Orlov, Sergey Soshnikov International Journal of Health Governance, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The study aims to help epidemiologists identify new patterns and trends in spreading infections on the example of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using data from search engines. The study identified the types of thematic search of Russian Internet users and queries that have a mathematically confirmed correlation with public health indicators: mortality and morbidity from COVID-19. The study a...

Smoking and vascular risk: are all forms of smoking harmful to all types of vascular disease?
Abstract: Smoking, both active and passive, is an established vascular risk factor. The present narrative review considers the effects of different forms of smoking (i.e. cannabis, cigar, pipe, smokeless tobacco and cigarette) on cardiovascular risk. Furthermore, the impact of smoking on several vascular risk factors [e.g. hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidaemia and haemostasis] and on vascular diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD), peripheral arterial disease (PAD), abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and carotid arterial disease, is discussed. The adverse effects of all forms of smoking and the interactio...

When are abrupt onsets found efficiently in complex visual search? Evidence from multielement asynchronous dynamic search - Kunar MA, Watson DG.
Previous work has found that search principles derived from simple visual search tasks do not necessarily apply to more complex search tasks. Using a Multielement Asynchronous Dynamic (MAD) visual search task, in which high numbers of stimuli could either ...
